August 2, we left Seattle for St. Petersburg, Russia, to join 16 other bicyclists from Bicycle Adventure Club, BAC, for a tour of St. Petersburg, the Baltic states, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, ending in Warsaw, Poland. We had an ambitious itinerary: 5 countries, 4 capital cities, over 1,400 miles! This distance was much too far to bicycle in 3 weeks and have any time at all to see the sights.  In the final tally, we biked 630 miles; the rest was on the bus.

Guy Carrier for BAC contracted with Super Tours of Poland to assist us. Wlodeck, bicyclist and tour guide, helped plan our route. Marcin, also a bicyclist, kept us from getting lost. Krystoff, drove the bus that carried our gear, and often us and our bicycles.

The distances between towns were too long to bike in a day. Krystoff drove us out of town to avoid heavy traffic. We would bicycle 40 to 70 miles on scenic back roads, then ride the rest of the way to our hotel in the bus, arriving just in time to shower and have dinner. On our free, non-biking days, we had city walking tours...a busy schedule!
